Brandon Sample

Executive Director

Brandon founded Prisology in 2013 after witnessing firsthand for more than 16 years the many flaws of the U.S. criminal justice system. Through Prisology, Brandon seeks to share his cutting edge ideas and unique perspective on criminal justice reform.

Brandon holds a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Vermont Law School. He received his Bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, from Adams State University.

In addition to running Prisology, Brandon also practices federal law in numerous courts around the United States. Brandon’s law practice is focused on federal sentencing issues, federal appeals, federal post conviction, and federal civil rights litigation.

Brandon enjoys writing about the law and contributes regularly to his blog Sentencing.net. Sentencing.net covers news and other matters related to the federal criminal justice system. He is also the author of The Habeas Citebook: Ineffective Assistance of Counsel. Brandon has also appeared on radio and other media outlets, and co-authored articles for The Huffington Post.

In June 2014, Brandon testified before the U.S. Sentencing Commission in support of retroactivity of Amendment 782 to the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines. Brandon personally speared a letter writing campaign that resulted in tens of thousands of public comment letters being submitted to the U.S. Sentencing Commission concerning Amendment 782.

In June 2017, Brandon–through Prisology–proposed a reform to the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines Sentencing Table. Brandon mobilized Prisology’s supporters through social media and other mediums in an effort to get this item on the Commission’s “priorities” list for the 2017-2018 Guideline amendment cycle.

On August 4, 2017, the U.S. Sentencing Commission announced that it had received a “RECORD” amount of public comment letters. In all, Prisology and its supporters provided the Sentencing Commission with over 81,000 letters supporting the proposed Sentencing Table reform.
